September Is the Real New Year in Phoenix. Here's How to Start It Right.

Did you know, Labor Day is the real New Year’s Day in Phoenix.

January 1st gets the credit, but let’s be honest about what January looks like here: it’s 65 degrees, the patio season is just starting, and motivation is genuinely easy to find. September is the one that actually tests you. You have just survived four straight months of 105-plus degree heat, your schedule is about to fill back up with school, work, sports, and everything else that got quietly paused in July, and somehow you are supposed to come out of all of that with your fitness habits intact.

Some people do. Most people are starting from scratch. And starting from scratch in September is not a failure. In this city, it is practically a tradition.

Why September Hits Different in the Valley

Phoenix summers aren’t just hot. They restructure your entire life. Workouts move to 5 a.m. or get skipped entirely. Cooking in a kitchen that hits 85 degrees by 8 p.m. stops being something anyone wants to do. Social plans collapse under the heat. The whole city goes into a kind of collective survival mode from June through August.

Then September arrives, and something shifts. The mornings get bearable. The evenings stretch. People start moving again, planning again, caring about their routines again. The energy that went into just getting through summer gets redirected toward actually building something.

That window matters. The habits you lock in during September and October tend to carry through the entire fall and into the new year. The question is what you anchor them to.

The Routine Problem Nobody Admits

The hardest part of a September reset is not motivation. Motivation shows up on its own when the weather breaks and you can breathe outside again. The hard part is execution, specifically the daily friction of figuring out what to eat, buying the ingredients, prepping the food, and doing it all consistently while your schedule goes from quiet to full in about two weeks.

Most people can hold it together for the first week back. By week three, when things really pick up, the wheels come off and the drive-through wins again.

The people who stay consistent through the fall are not more disciplined. They have fewer decisions to make. Their meals are handled before the week starts, and that one removed friction point changes everything downstream.

Something New to Come Back To

This fall, Scratch Culinary is making the reset easier with a few changes worth knowing about.

Deliveries are returning to their original schedule: fresh meals arriving every Monday and Wednesday, right at the start and midpoint of your week. Two reliable anchor points that keep your nutrition consistent no matter how unpredictable everything else gets.

The kitchen is also rolling out a new grilled chicken menu, built by Chef Tom D’Ambrosio, a Food Network Chopped Champion, around a completely updated cooking method. The chicken is now grilled in the sauce directly, which changes the texture and the flavor in a way that makes it worth trying even if you have ordered from us before.

Eight or more new recipes rotate every week. Macros are printed on every container. Everything heats in under three minutes. And if you are tracking on MyFitnessPal, the barcode integration handles the logging automatically.

Meals run around ten dollars each, with sizes from 300 to 700 calories depending on your goals. We deliver across the entire Phoenix valley, from Carefree to Queen Creek and Surprise to Buckeye. Kitchen pickup is available too.

Make September Count

The reset window does not stay open forever. The longer you wait to lock in a fall routine, the harder it gets as October fills up.
